Definition of Multiples and Factors

1. Multiple of a number

Natural numbers are numbers starting with 1, 2, 3, 4, ..., and so on. If you multiply all natural numbers by 2, you get multiples of two, namely 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, ....

In the same way, then:

  The multiples of 3 are 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, ....

  The multiples of 4 are 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 24, ....

2. Factor a Number

  A factor is an even divisor of a number. If the number A is divisible by the number B, then B is said to be a factor of A.

  How to determine the factors of a number?

  Take a look at some of the following examples!

1. Let's determine the factors of 12. Answer: The number 12 is decomposed into the multiplication of two numbers as follows.

12 = 1 × 12

= 2 × 6

= 3 × 4

  So the factors of 12 are 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 12.

2. Let's determine the factors of 16.

Answer: The number 16 is broken down into the multiplication of two numbers as follows.

  16 = 1 × 16

= 2 × 8

= 4×4

So the factors of 16 are 1, 2, 4, 8, 16
