Indonesia Strongly Condemns the Burning of the Koran during an Anti-Erdogan Demonstration in Sweden

Indonesia through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs ( Kemenlu ) strongly condemns the burning of the Koran by Swedish politician Rasmus Paludan in Stockholm on Saturday (21/1).

Paludan's arson was carried out during a demonstration against Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan who asked Sweden to no longer protect Kurdish activists in his country.

Erdoğan made the request as one of the conditions if Sweden wants to get Turkey's blessing to enter the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).

"Indonesia strongly condemns the burning of the Holy Qur'an by Rasmus Paludan, Swedish politician, in Stockholm (21/1)," the Ministry of Foreign Affairs wrote on Twitter on Sunday (22/1).

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that this blasphemy act had injured and

tarnish religious tolerance.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also underlined that freedom of expression must be carried out responsibly.

Previously, the act of burning copies of the Koran at the demonstration was carried out by Rasmus Paludan - a Danish citizen who is the leader of the right-wing political party, Hard Line.

Paludan, who is a Swedish citizen, is known to have in a number of demonstrations in the past also burned the Koran several times

There has been no immediate statement from Paludan, but in his notification of permission for the demonstration to Swedish police, Paludan claimed his protest was against attempts by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to influence freedom of expression in the country.

In response to this incident, Swedish Foreign Minister Tobias Billström said the provocation of Islamophobia was appalling.

"Sweden has broad freedom of expression, but that doesn't mean that the Swedish Government, or myself, support the opinions expressed," Billstrom said via his Twitter account.

Meanwhile, in Istanbul, Turkey, hundreds of demonstrators burned the Swedish flag in front of the country's consulate in response to the burning of a copy of the Koran in Stockholm.
