Real Madrid took its first steps in 1900 at the "Campo de la Estrada", Spain. The club was officially founded in 1902, and until 1912 it was located in Narvaez. The first stadium used by Madrid was named "O'Donnell", which was built in 1912.
Two years later a small tribune was established, which accommodates 216 spectators, today the stadium has toilets and bathrooms for players. The club officially had the name Real Madrid in 1920, when king Alfonso XIII, gave the name "Real" which means kingdom. The last game at O'Donnel was against Servette Genf in 1923. The increasing attendance forced Real Madrid to move to the "Campo de la Ciudad Lineal" stadium which had a capacity of 8000 spectators.
In 1924, Real Madrid again had a new stadium called Chamartín-Stadion, which became Real Madrid's first stadium. It opens on 17 May 1924 with Real Madrid's game against Newcastle United. A few years later after the stadium was destroyed by civil war in Spain, the stadium was reopened in 1939. In 1943 Real Madrid again planned to have a new stadium. The Chamartín-Stadion which has a capacity of 22,500 is no longer sufficient for the entire number of spectators.
On 22 June 1944 Real Madrid bought the land, and three years later, in 1947, the new stadium with a capacity of 75,342 was completed. At that time it was the most modern stadium in Spain, in 1955 it was inaugurated as the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu. At the end of 1957 the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu had a capacity of 125,000 spectators. April 4, 1958 was the record for the most visitors of 135,000 when they played against Vasas Budapest.

For the 1982 world championships, the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu was again renovated, so it only had a capacity of 90,200. Through some repairs in 1992, the audience capacity was reduced to 90,000.
In 2002 the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu was renovated again, with the Panorama Restaurant built on top of the stadium. Visitor capacity was again reduced to 74,000 visitors. 3,300 VIP places can be reached with 8 lifts. All about Santiago Bernabeu Stadium
· Originally named the Chamartin Stadium after Real Madrid's previous stadium, the Grand Bernabeu opened in December 1947. Real Madrid officially adopted its current official name - Santiago Bernabeu Stadium - in January 1955.
· The land on which the stadium was built cost around US$20,000 in 1944 and the total construction cost was US$275,000.
· Renovation work carried out has reduced the capacity from the initial 120,000 thousand seats to approximately 80,000 seats.
· Architects Luis Alemany Soler and Manuel Munoz Monasterio were the designers of the stadium, and the foundation stone was laid on 27 October 1944
· Pope John Paul II visited Madrid and once gathered more than 100,000 Spanish children at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium in 1982.
