Question: What is the ruling on trusting a psychic's predictions? I noticed that sometimes a psychic's prediction is correct, like Mama Loren's prediction about a series of disasters in early 2007?

Answer: Before answering your question, there are several things you need to know as follows:

The only one who knows the affairs of the unseen is Allah Ta'ala as He says:

Indeed, with God is knowledge of the Hour, and He will send down rain, and He knows what is in the wombs, and no soul knows what it will earn tomorrow, and no soul knows in what land it will die. Indeed, Allah is All-Knowing. Bear

"Surely Allah, only with Him is the knowledge of the Day of Resurrection; and He it is Who sends down rain, and knows what is in the womb. And no one can know (for sure) what he will do tomorrow. And no one can know on which earth he will die. Indeed, Allah is All-Knowing and All-Knowing" (QS. Luqman: 34).

And with Him are the keys of the unseen. No one knows them except Him. And He knows what is on land and sea. Not a leaf falls but He knows it, not a grain in the darkness of the earth. wet or dry except in a clear Book

"And with God are the keys of all the unseen; no one knows it except He Himself, and He knows what is on the land and in the sea, and not a single leaf falls except He knows it (also), and not a grain of seed falls in the darkness of the earth, and not anything wet or which is dry, unless it is written in a real book (Lauh Mahfudz)" (QS. Al-An'am: 59).

The unseen matters referred to in the verse above are all matters that are impossible for human reason and senses to reach, such as determining the Day of Judgment, when a person will be born and die, what humans or other creatures will do tomorrow, and others.

Allah Ta'ala only gives some of this unseen knowledge to His messengers according to His will. Allah says:

God would not leave the believers in what you are upon, until He distinguishes the evil from the good, and God would not make known to you the unseen, but God chooses from His messengers If He wills, then believe in God and His Messengers, and if you believe and fear God, then you will have a great reward.

"Allah will never leave the believers in your current condition, until He separates the bad (hypocrites) from the good (believers). And God will never show you unseen things, but God chooses whomever He wants from among His messengers. Therefore believe in God and His messengers; and if you have faith and piety, then for you is a great reward" (QS. Aali 'Imran: 179).

He knows the unseen, so He does not reveal His unseen to anyone, except for one whom He is pleased with from a Messenger, for He walks before Him and behind Him as a watcher.

"(He is God) Who knows the unseen, so He does not show anyone about the unseen. Except for the messenger whom He is pleased with, then indeed He has guardians (angels) in front of him and behind him" (QS. Al-Jin: 26-27).

Ibn 'Abbas said, "This verse means: Allah only informs His messengers about unseen things through revelation. Furthermore, they (His messengers - namely the Prophets and Apostles) showed their people this unseen matter and other laws of Allah, whereas apart from His messengers no one knew" (see Tafsir Ad-Durrul-Mantsur 8/309 by As-Suyuthi) .

Despite this, God's messengers from among the Prophets and Messengers do not know the unseen things absolutely, but only to the extent that God tells them. God said :

Say, “I do not tell you that I have the treasures of God, nor do I know the unseen, nor do I tell you that I am an angel. I only follow what is revealed to me.”

"Say: I did not tell you that the treasury of Allah is with me, nor did I know the unseen, nor did I tell you that I was an angel. I do not follow except what is revealed to me" (QS. Al-An'am: 50).

Say, “I do not possess for myself any benefit or harm except what God wills. And if I had known the unseen, I would have multiplied the good, and no evil has touched me. I am only a warner and a Good news for people who believe

Say: "I do not have the power to attract benefits for myself and do not (also) reject harm except what Allah wills. And if I knew the unseen, I would certainly do as much good as possible and I would not be harmed. I am nothing but a warner, and a bearer of glad tidings for the believers." (QS. Al-A'raf: 188).

'Aishah may Allah be pleased with her said:

Whoever tells you that he knows what is tomorrow has lied. Then I read: “And no soul knows what it will earn tomorrow.”

"And whoever tells you that the Prophet sallallaahu 'alaihi wasallam knows what will happen tomorrow, then he is really telling a lie." Then 'Aishah recited the verse: "And no one can know (with certainty) what he will do tomorrow" (HR. Bukhari number 4574 Bab Tafsir Suratin-Najm).

From what has been explained above, it is clear to all of us that the unseen is absolutely the right of God, and He only gave some of that knowledge to the Prophets and Messengers to prove the truth of the message they brought.

If there is a person who claims that he knows some unseen matters/affairs, then it is certain that he is lying based on the Qur'an and As-Sunnah. They are the people who are called shamans (kahin - aka mbah dukun).

Sometimes, indeed, the shaman's words coincidentally match the truth. There is an authentic hadith that explains this phenomenon. Narrated from 'Aisyah radliyallaahu 'anhaa she said:

The Messenger of God, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, asked people about soothsayers, and he said, “It is nothing.” They said, “O Messenger of God, sometimes they tell us something and it is true.” So the Messenger of God, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, said, “That word of truth is snatched by the genie and reads it into the ear of his guardian, and they mix with it a hundred lies.”

People asked Rasulullah sallallaahu 'alaihi wasallam about the news that the healers had conveyed. He replied: "The news is a lie". They said: "O Messenger of Allah, indeed the news they convey is sometimes true?". Rasulullah sallallaahu 'alaihi wasallam replied: "That is the truth that the jinn stole, then he whispered into the ears of his followers. Then he mixed it with a hundred lies" (HR. Bukhari number 5429 Chapter: Al-Kahaanah and Muslim number 2228 Chapter: Tahriimil-Kahaanah).

From Abu Hurairah radliyallaahu 'anhu, the Messenger of Allah sallallaahu 'alaihi wasallam said:

When God decides the matter in heaven, the angels will beat with their wings and submit to us for His saying, like a chain on Safwan. Ali said, and others said, Safwan will carry them out. So, if “it dismays from their hearts, they say, ‘What did your Lord say?’ They say,” to the one who said, “the truth, and He is the Most High, the Great.” Then those who eavesdrop and those who eavesdrop will hear it like this, one above another and described. Sufyan with his hand, and he spread the fingers of his right hand, placing them one on top of the other. Perhaps the meteor caught up with the listener before he threw it at its companion and burned him, and perhaps it did not catch it until he threw it at the next one, at the one below him, until they threw it to the ground. Perhaps Sufyan said, until it reaches the ground and is thrown at the mouth. The magician tells a hundred lies along with it, then he is truthful, and they say: Didn’t he tell us on such-and-such a day that such-and-such would happen? And we found it to be the truth of the word that was heard from heaven.

"When Allah decrees a command in the heavens, the angels flap their wings in obedience to His word, as if the word (heard) were like the rattling of an iron chain (pulled) on a flat rock. It deafened them (so that they fell unconscious from fear). So when fear has been removed from their hearts, they say: "What has your Lord said?" They answered: “(The words) are correct. And He is the Most High, the Most Great." That's when the news tappers (revelation) heard it. The situation of news tappers is like this: some of them are on top of others - described by Sufyan (the narrator of the hadith - Abul-Jauzaa') with the palm of his hand, with his fingers stretched and open - so when the news tapper (the one above) When he heard the sentence, he conveyed it to those below him. Then it is conveyed again to those below it, and so on until it is conveyed to the mouth of the sorcerer or soothsayer. However, sometimes the devil who taps the news is hit by a shihab (meteor) before he can deliver the sentence (word), and sometimes he has time to deliver it before being hit by a syihab. Then with that one sentence he heard, the sorcerer or soothsayer committed a hundred kinds of lies. They (who came to the sorcerer or soothsayer) said: "Didn't he tell us that on this day it would happen like that (and it really happened)"; so that the sorcerer or soothsayer is believed to be because of one sentence that has been heard from the sky" (HR. Bukhari numbers 4424 and 4522).

In reality, the shaman has become the devil's guardian in betraying God to mislead people. The news conveyed by the devil required him to commit disobedience to God, including committing polytheism which is the greatest sin in the eyes of God.

It is illegal for us to believe the words of a shaman who preaches supernatural things. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

Whoever goes to a fortune teller and asks him about something, his prayers will not be accepted for forty nights

"Whoever comes to a fortune teller and asks him about something and he confirms it, his prayers will not be accepted for forty nights" (HR. Muslim number 2230).

Whoever has intercourse with a menstruating woman, an anal woman, or a soothsayer has disbelieved in what was revealed to Muhammad, may God bless him and grant him peace.

“Whoever comes to (touches) his wife who is menstruating, or comes to (touches) her in her anus, or goes to a shaman and confirms what he said; then indeed he has renounced himself (kufr) from the teachings that were revealed to Muhammad sallallaahu 'alaihi wasallam" (HR. Abu Dawud number 3904, At-Tirmidhi number 135, An-Nasa'i in Al-Kubra 10/124, and others ; authentic).

Conclusion: The practice of shamanism is illegal. In fact, it is included in the things that can invalidate a person's Islam. It is also forbidden for us to come, ask something, and believe what a shaman/divination says. If what the shaman said was true, then it was just a coincidence. How many (read : most) predictions of a shaman are wrong, not something with reality. Allahu a'lam.
